'Ruby Velvet' is a hybrid between the big species A. flavidus, crossed with the more dwarf and landscape useful species to produce a lovely intermediate variety that is vigorous, disease resistant, fairly frost hardy and has a great display of 'kangaroo paw' flowers in a deep blood red with shocking yellow/lime throats. The plant only grows to 1 1/2 feet, making it very small and a good choice for containers, but with stunning branched inflorescences which sit about 3 feet tall. Flowering occurs over a long period in the summer, and as a cut flower the vase life is very long.
