Salvia regla (1 qt) | Mountain Sage (1 qt)

Native to western Texas and Mexico. Widely planted in Texas as an important hummingbird plant. Large growing lovely formed plant, to 6 feet, with branches that nod downward. Flowers in the fall, with large bright red flowers and showy chartreuse and red flower bracts. Striking when in bloom and very attractive to hummingbirds. The large deep green leaves also make for an interesting foliage plant. It prefers some afternoon shade in hottest areas, but adapts to full sun if given deep, regular waterings.

Prune this plant as you would a deciduous shrub, only pruning lightly into the wood. It does not appreciate heavy pruning. Plant alongside Salvia mexicana 'Limelight' to create a fall blooming 'hummingbird heaven'. Underplant with shady perennials like Heuchera 'Creme Brulee' and Heucherella 'Stoplight' for a beautiful fall display.

It is hardy to 15 °F, although may suffer some foliage damage. Mulch the root system in marginal climates.
